‘Gleaning’ is the act of collecting leftover crops after they have been commercially harvested. It has been carried out for centuries and in the past was essential for the poor to survive.
Nowadays gleaning has an important role to play to help to avoid wasting nutritious foods such as fruit and vegetables.
To contribute to the ‘war on food waste’ The Deeping Lions Club is organising a Gleaning event on the 18th and 19th September. Farmers, growers, allotment holders and gardeners and householders who have any unwanted produce tha t can easier be used, are invited to bring produce along to Market Deeping Community Centre Garden on those dates. Club Members will then distribute the food to care homes and charities to feed the hungry and other good causes.

The Lions Year
Community Centre garden – March to October
We have been helping maintain the Community Centre garden for many years and in 2022 we developed a part of it as a sensory garden designed, with the guidance of Sense, to be enjoyed especially by adults and children who are deaf and blind or have complex disabilities. With the help of funds from Tesco, we are adding more features to the garden in 2023.
Charter Dinner – April
Each year we have our Charter Dinner. This is a Black Die Dinner to which all Club Members, Partners, Lions from other Clubs and our friends come together to celebrate the clubs Birthday.
The Deepings Carnival June
There has been an annual carnival in The Deepings for over 100 years (and there are records of a “Towngate feast” from some time in the 1200’s). The Deepings Lions were asked to take it over from 2005 and in recent years we have been helped by The Deepings Rotary Club to put on a popular free event with arena displays, live music, funfair rides, stalls and refreshments. The 2023 event will take place on Sunday 25th June on John Eve Field, Godsey Lane.
The “world famous” Deepings Lions duck race involves 2,000 or more plastic ducks battling valiantly down the River Welland often against the wind to raise money for a different charity every year. The main event is supported by smaller races of large ducks sponsored by local businesses, and by a street fair along the Lincolnshire bank. We are grateful for the help of the Scouts Canoe Club in shepherding the ducks and ensuring that none escape into the environment. The event takes place on the first Sunday in September.
Christmas Market Nov/Dec
We always join the Deeping Town council in attending the towns Xmas market with a stall promoting the work we do and raising funds.
From the beginning of December we join with the Rotary Club to take our sleigh on its annual runs in and around Deeping and the surrounding villages. This is our biggest fundraising event for the year and we really enjoy seeing everyone getting in the Christmas spirit and celebrating Santa’s arrival.
