‘Gleaning’ is the act of collecting leftover crops after they have been commercially harvested. It has been carried out for centuries and in the past was essential for the poor to survive.
Nowadays gleaning has an important role to play to help to avoid wasting nutritious foods such as fruit and vegetables.
To contribute to the ‘war on food waste’ The Deeping Lions Club is organising a Gleaning event on the 18th and 19th September. Farmers, growers, allotment holders and gardeners and householders who have any unwanted produce tha t can easier be used, are invited to bring produce along to Market Deeping Community Centre Garden on those dates. Club Members will then distribute the food to care homes and charities to feed the hungry and other good causes.

The Lions Year
Charter Dinner – April
Each year we have our Charter Dinner. This is a Black Die Dinner to which all Club Members, Partners, Lions from other Clubs and our friends come together to celebrate the clubs Birthday.
The Deepings Lions Carnival July
This famous event has been going for over 100 years (although records show a “towngate feast” from some time in the 1200’s). The Deepings Lions were asked to take it over from 2005 and we have been growing the event each year into something we hope has become a major event in the towns social calendar with approx 4,000 people either taking part or attending last year’s event.
This year we ran the “world famous” Lions Deeping duck race with 2,000 plastic ducks battling valiantly down the River Welland and against the wind to see who would come in first winning their sponsor a cheque for £100. We also ran a couple of other races for The Estate Agents and the Publicans aided by the Scouts in Canoes as the small number of ducks were no match for the gusts of wind. The proceeds last year supported the Lincs. & Notts. Air Ambulance.
The event for 2019 we hope to make even bigger with even more ducks and twice the fun. Come along and support us, you know you want to. For 2019 we will be supporting St, Barnabas Hospice.
Christmas Market Nov
We always join the Deeping Town council in attending the towns Xmas market with our sleigh and a stall promoting the work we do and raising even more money.
From the beginning of December it’s all hands to the pump getting the sleigh ready for its annual runs in and around Deeping and the surrounding villages. This is our biggest fundraising event for the year and the time we really enjoy seeing everyone getting in the Christmas spirit and celebrating the arrival of the man in Red.
